Your Drinking Habits

Count each standard drink (12 oz beer, 5 oz wine, 1.5 oz spirit)

About This Tool

The Alcohol Impact Calculator translates weekly drinking habits into concrete health and financial numbers: calories, sugar load, liver processing hours, and the gains you could expect from a sober month. It uses standard drink definitions (14 g alcohol per drink) and USDA calorie averages for each beverage type.

Liver processing time is based on the well-established rate of approximately one standard drink per hour. During that time, the liver prioritises alcohol metabolism over other critical functions — including blood sugar regulation, hormone processing, and toxin filtration.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How are the weekly calories calculated?
We multiply your drinks per week by the average calories for your selected drink type. Standard values are sourced from USDA nutritional data. Beer (12 oz) ≈ 153 kcal, wine (5 oz) ≈ 125 kcal, spirits (1.5 oz) ≈ 97 kcal, and mixed cocktails ≈ 220 kcal.
What does "liver processing hours" mean?
The liver metabolizes roughly one standard drink (14 g of alcohol) per hour. Liver processing hours represent how many hours per week your liver is occupied clearing alcohol — time during which it cannot efficiently perform its other ~500 functions like filtering toxins or producing proteins.
How is the annual sugar equivalent calculated?
Alcoholic beverages — especially cocktails, hard ciders, and wines — contain residual sugar. We total that sugar across a full year and convert it to teaspoons (1 tsp ≈ 4 g of sugar) to make it tangible.
What is the "sober month" projection?
A sober month (30 days) is a popular alcohol-free challenge. The projection shows how many calories, sugar teaspoons, and liver-processing hours you would avoid in those 30 days, along with a rough estimate of fat mass not added (based on 3,500 kcal ≈ 1 lb). Use our Caffeine Half-Life Calculator to also optimize your sleep during that period.
Is any of my data sent to a server?
No. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. No personal data leaves your device.
How accurate is the weight-loss estimate?
The weight estimate is a rough approximation based on the "3,500 kcal per pound" rule of thumb. Actual results depend on whether the saved calories create a true deficit relative to your total daily energy expenditure. For a deeper look at health metrics, try our Body Fat Percentage Calculator.
