About This Tool

Switching careers is one of the biggest financial decisions you can make. This calculator quantifies the true cost — lost income during retraining, direct expenses, and the earnings gap — then projects when (and if) the switch pays off.

For evaluating individual skills within your new career, use our Skill ROI Calculator. To understand your real hourly value as a freelancer after switching, try the Hourly Rate Lie Detector.

All calculations run in your browser — no data is sent to any server.

How It Works

Lost Income = Current Salary × (Retraining Months ÷ 12)
Total Switch Cost = Lost Income + Retraining Cost
Current Lifetime Earnings = Current Salary × Years to Retirement
New Lifetime Earnings = Target Entry Salary × (Years to Retirement − Retraining Years)
Break-even = year where cumulative new earnings overtake cumulative current earnings

The switch cost includes both hard costs (courses, certifications) and soft costs (foregone salary while retraining). The lifetime earnings projection assumes you stay in the new career until retirement and accounts for the delayed start.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does this account for salary growth?
This calculator uses flat salaries for simplicity. In reality, both careers may grow — but the entry-level gap and switch cost are the most important factors in the early years.
What is included in the total switch cost?
Lost income during retraining (your current salary × retraining years) plus your out-of-pocket retraining expenses (courses, bootcamps, certifications, etc.).
What if the new career eventually pays more?
The break-even year calculation shows when cumulative earnings in the new career catch up to staying put. If the new career has higher long-term earning potential, re-run with a higher target salary.
How do I estimate retraining time?
Include the full gap period: bootcamp or degree duration, job search time, and any unpaid internship. Use our Skill ROI Calculator to evaluate specific skills within your new field.
